I have been a supporter of this ebook effort since its Kickstarter days and would highly encourage you to purchase the book for yourself.  And you can’t get much better than to choose the price you want to pay for it! Here ‘s the link to this fabulous offer.  Don’t miss it!...

Flour or Corn Tortilla?

Do you prefer a flour or corn tortilla?  I like both and use one or the other daily.  The tortilla adds so much to your meal – both as a utensil and an essential component of the meal itself.  When they are well made, with good ingredients, they are heavenly. Forty years later I still remember eating the warm flour tortillas immediately after buying them at a little place in San Felipe in Northern México. Below is a delicious corn...

Hungry? Head to the Mercado

No matter where I go in México, I always pay a visit to the local mercado.  Not just because I love to eat but because I love learning about all the different produce available in each area. Even if we are staying in an apartment or hotel, I always buy a bit of food for us to enjoy for snacks.  Jicama and carrots, always.  Cut up fruit, nuts, and dried fruit, often. In the picture above – at the top...

Dried Fruit Treats

If you have a sweet tooth,  next time you’re in a mercado keep an eye out for a display like the one above.  I love to snack on the dried fruits, some of which are sweetened and some are not. The vendor here also sells nuts and various candies like gumdrops (gomitas) and gummy bears. I imagine both of those are made with gelatin, so not vegetarian friendly. But you can enjoy all of the dried fruit and nuts. My...

Vegetarians, Beware!

You don’t need to be a vegetarian to want to know what’s in your food.  It’s not unreasonable to ask, just do it with a smile, always! Some people are more easy going and can eat food even if it has been made with lard or meat broth.  One vegetarian friend said they are able to remove errant chunks of meat and continue eating.  I can’t do that, if french fries have been fried in the same oil as fish,...

Mangoes At The Beach

If you are lucky enough to live at the beach (like I have for the past ten years!) you will be familiar with beach vendors walking along selling mangoes on a stick. Cut into a very pretty petal shape, there are usually a variety of ripeness, from very green to bright orange.  The vendor will add a squeeze of lime and let you add your own chile powder if you like.  ...

¿Escamocha o Gazpacho?

I love exploring a new city in México and seeing what kind of snacks they have.  The picture above is a fruit salad in a cup that we enjoyed in downtown Guadalajara.  Called either escamocha or gazpacho, the fruit is usually put in the cup and then crema, coconut, or chile powder is added on top.  You haven’t lived until you’ve tried it! I’m a purist and usually want my treats without added cream, so if you are like me...

Aguas Frescas

I love trying every Méxican fruit drink that I come across.  Aguas Frescas (fresh water) are drinks made with a combination of fruit and water.  They are delicious! They are often served with a big ladle from the glass jars like pictured above. You might also find these on a menu as Agua del Día. You should ask what it is and give it a try!  ¿Cuál es tu agua del día hoy? A few of my favorites are: VOCABULARY Watermelon...

My Favorite Street Food

Most people would probably think TACOS when they think of Mexican street food, but my favorite is cut up fruit!  In the picture above she is eating mango, watermelon, cucumber and jicama.  This is just about the perfect snack, in my opinion. You can expect to pay about 20 or 30 pesos for this cup.  What a bargain! VOCABULARY mango – el mango watermelon – la sandía cucumber – el pepino jicama – la jícama...
